Artificial intelligence has changed the economics of innovation. What once took days can now take hours. What once took a team can now be drafted by one person with a good prompt. Product concepts, landing pages, feature lists, customer personas, messaging directions, pitch narratives, survey questions, and even validation plans can now be produced at extraordinary speed.
That is real progress. But it comes with a hidden cost. AI does not just help good ideas move faster. It also helps weak ideas look coherent, strategic, and scalable long before they have earned that confidence in the real world. That may be one of the most important innovation risks of the AI era.
The new bottleneck is no longer idea generation
For years, many teams behaved as if their biggest challenge was coming up with ideas. Today, that is much less true. AI can generate endless possibilities. It can suggest features, identify patterns, package narratives, and make almost any concept sound plausible. So the bottleneck has moved.
The hard part is no longer producing options. The hard part is knowing which options are grounded in a real human struggle, a real decision context, and a real mechanism of behavior. In other words, the scarce resource is no longer ideation. It is problem integrity.
The real danger is not bad answers. It is false confidence.
A lot of discussion around AI focuses on accuracy: whether the model is right, wrong, hallucinating, or incomplete. That matters, of course. But in innovation work, the deeper danger is often not factual error. It is premature certainty.
AI can produce outputs with the texture of insight. The language is polished. The logic appears clean. The structure feels strategic. The result is persuasive enough to move a team forward, even when the underlying assumptions remain untested.
This is where weak ideas become dangerous. Not because they exist, but because they become easier to package, easier to defend, and easier to scale.
A founder can now generate a product concept in the morning, produce crisp positioning by noon, build a prototype by evening, and start attracting validation theater the next day. All of this can happen before anyone has deeply understood what progress the customer is actually trying to make.
Speed can amplify the wrong thing
Innovation teams often assume that faster is better. But speed only helps when direction is grounded. If the underlying diagnosis is weak, speed does not solve the problem. It compounds it.
AI lowers the cost of producing artifacts that look like evidence. A clean prototype is not evidence. A compelling positioning statement is not evidence. A smart-looking persona is not evidence. Even a set of elegant strategic options is not evidence.
They may be useful tools. But they are not proof that the team understands the real job, the real friction, or the real conditions under which a customer would switch.
This is why AI can make bad ideas scale faster. It allows teams to operationalize assumptions before they have properly challenged them.
Why JTBD matters more now
This is exactly where Jobs to Be Done becomes more valuable.
Not because it is trendy. Not because every team should follow one method religiously. And not because it gives a neat vocabulary for workshops.
JTBD matters because it pushes teams back toward causality. It asks a more demanding question than, “What features do people want?” It asks: What progress is this person trying to make in a specific situation, and what forces are shaping that movement?
That shift matters. Especially now. In a world flooded with generated possibilities, JTBD reintroduces sequence, context, trade-offs, anxieties, triggers, habits, and switching forces. It helps teams see customer behavior as movement rather than as static preferences.
And that is where better decisions begin.
People do not buy products. They try to make progress.
One of the most common mistakes in product and venture building is treating customers as if they are choosing between features on a spreadsheet. In reality, people are usually trying to move from one state to another. They are trying to reduce friction, gain control, avoid risk, save face, move faster, feel capable, or create a better future state for themselves.
That is the real terrain. JTBD helps teams focus on that terrain instead of becoming hypnotized by the solution itself.
This is particularly important in AI venture building, where founders can now generate new applications almost endlessly. When the cost of building falls, the temptation to build before understanding becomes even stronger. That makes discipline around the customer’s job more important, not less.
Interviews help. Timelines help more. Observation often helps most.
In my own work, I have found JTBD most useful not as a single framework, but as a way of going deeper into the roots of the problem.
That usually means not relying on one method alone. Deep interviews are valuable. Timelines are especially useful because they help reconstruct how the struggle unfolded over time: what changed, what triggered movement, what alternatives were tried, where hesitation appeared, and what finally pushed action. This gives a far more realistic picture than static statements about “needs.”
But observation often reveals the most.
People do not always understand their own behavior clearly. Even when they are honest, they may compress, clean up, or rationalize the story after the fact. Observation helps recover what polished explanation can hide. It reveals workaround behavior, micro-frictions, emotional signals, contradictions, and the difference between what people say and what they actually do.
In the AI era, this kind of grounded observation becomes even more valuable. The more fluent synthetic insight becomes, the more important direct contact with reality is.
Frameworks are tools, not religion
There is another reason JTBD remains useful: it can be practiced pragmatically.
Different contexts call for different tools. Sometimes the Wheel of Progress is helpful. Sometimes a JTBD canvas helps a team align. Sometimes timelines, switching interviews, or simple observational work are more useful than any formal framework. In more structured contexts, ODI may add rigor. In ambiguous early-stage situations, it may be too rigid too early.
The point is not loyalty to a branded method. The point is to use whichever tool helps expose the truth of the situation most clearly.
Framework worship is often a form of performative rigor. Teams use the language of discipline without actually improving diagnosis. That is not a methodology problem. It is a thinking problem.
The real advantage now is filtration, not generation
Many teams still treat innovation as an exercise in producing more ideas. But in an AI-rich environment, that is no longer the edge.
The edge is filtration.
The teams that win will not necessarily be the ones that generate the most concepts. They will be the ones that reject weak assumptions earlier, protect problem integrity longer, and avoid scaling the wrong premise just because it sounds intelligent.
That is why JTBD deserves renewed attention. Not as dogma. Not as a workshop template. But as a discipline for forcing better questions before faster execution.
AI has made creation dramatically cheaper. That is a gift. But when creation becomes cheap, diagnosis becomes priceless.
And that may be the real competitive advantage of the next era.
